Week 1 Science Methods Blog Post

What did you learn this week?

This week, I learned about Next Generation Science Standards and how to navigate them. I learned that a code is a unique identifier for each standard based on the standard's grade level, content area, and topic of standard. I also learned about Performance Expectation, which is a statement that specifies what students are expected to know and how a student will be assessed at the end of the session. These are both very important while navigating the standard you use with your students.

Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing?

I have never had experience with NGSS before, so I was confused about the new information about standards that were given in class. At first, figuring out the labels that are in the standard was very confusing, which was saying the grade level and if it was "Life Science" or another discipline. What was clear was how Next Generation Science Standards differ from other standards used in the past.

Can you relate to what you learned with what you already knew?

When we were working on the dream classroom activity in lab, I related to what I already knew about what I want my dream classroom to look like. After further discussion with my partner in the activity, I learned that I want more space for collaboration for my students. Build a community in the classroom through the seating organized throughout the room.

Pictured is my dream classroom.

  1. Hi Madison!
I totally agree with you in finding the NGSS labels confusing. I definitely still need practice finding the correct standard.
I really like how you included one of those small group u-shaped tables in your dream classroom drawing. I also had that in mine!
