Week 3 reflection

What did you learn this week?

This week, I learned about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and a mealworm. I learned that the life cycle of the mealworm and the monarch butterfly is very similar, but they also have different steps in the cycle as well. The main difference between these two life cycles is the pupa stage. The butterfly goes through the chrysalis stage, and the mealworm is just in the pupa stage.

Are you able to relate to what you learned with what you already knew?

I remember in preschool, we learned very basic information about the monarch butterfly life cycle, so while we were learning about it today, I made some connections to what I learned a long time ago. I knew that the butterfly went from egg to caterpillar to butterfly, but I did not know the Pupa phase was called the chrysalis stage, which was very interesting to learn.

How can you apply what you learned to your teaching in the future?

I think that the activity we did in class was a great way to demonstrate life cycles. I will use this activity later in my science classes because it gives the students some freedom because they can pick which life cycle they want to demonstrate. This activity also helps students tap into their creative side since they are making the phases in the life cycle with playdough.

  1. Hi Madison! I also did not know or remember that the Pupa phase was called the chrysalis stage, so that was a good refresh on that. I would also use this activity in my future classroom as I thought it was a great way to learn and demonstrate the different life cycles!

  2. HI Madison! I also remember learning about the Monarch butterflies in school. I talked about how we actually hatched them in class! I also agree with you on the activity we did and how it gives students the freedom to make what they want with still doing the lesson.

  3. Hi Madison! I also really liked this activity to demonstrate life cycles and I also want to use this activity in my future classroom because it is very interactive, visual, and gives freedom to all the students. Good post!
