week 11

What did you learn this week?

- This week in our lab section, I learned the importance of observation in an elementary science classroom. We were learning how to write down proper observations using the five senses in our candy activity. We talked about how when you make observations, it isn't best if you just make the observations and then not explain or ask any questions afterward. It is a full-on observation if you make the observation and then explain why you made that observation, and then ask questions that you can later answer with further observations.

How can you apply what you learned to teaching in the future?

- The activity we did in class was a great way to show the different observation methods. I would use this activity in a future class that I teach. I would change the activity slightly to make it less messy for elementary schoolers. I would have them use less water or a deeper plate for them to put in so there is no room for spillage. I would also use the observation sheet in an activity because I think it would be an excellent idea for students to test their observations and show others to guess the object they were observing.

Questions:

How can we take this activity further into other activities?

How can this activity be assessed?

  1. Hi! It was made very clear how important the skill of observation is and how we must carefully teach this topic to young students for improvement on their academics. I also enjoyed the activities that we did in class to discover this. Great post!

  2. You make a great point, how can this be assessed? I can definitely think of formative assessments but I feel as though they would have to conduct an experiment to show true knowledge.

  3. Hi Madison! I also agree with your question about how can we take this activity further into other activities and how can it be assessed. I actually had not thought about these questions before, but now I am also wondering about them. Good post.
